Convert DMG to CDR or ISO with Disk Utility

However, it is an unfortunate, but hopefully rare, need for Mac users to have to share data with Windows & Linux users.

We would prefer whether we could only remain in our own little world, left alone by the masses. But we are also able to only dream.

However, when it comes to sharing files it is normally simple. But whether you require to share a disk image that’s been made in Apple’s dmg format it is not too straightforward.

Well, we covered the way to make dmg files in OS X before. But Windows & also Linux unable to do anything with this disk image file format. So we must have to transform them into a format they are also able to understand. Though the ISO image format.

ISO files can also be mounted in Linux & Windows as virtual drives or burned to a CD or DVD. And luckily, transforming dmg files to iso images in OS X is straightforward. No third-party utilities needed.

Here’s how it’s done.

Method: Convert DMG to CDR or ISO with Disk Utility Using The Disk Utility

Well, Guys! This method also uses the Disk Utility in order to convert to cdr & then iso. But it won’t work whether you like to use the iso file in order to burn a bootable CD or DVD. Whether that is what you guys will need to do skip down to the command line method.

The first step is to transform your dmg file simply to cdr by using the Mac’s Disk Utility. Though a cdr file is necessarily an uncompressed, raw disk image.

Search the dmg file that you guys wish to alter and double click to mount it in Finder.

Here you have to head to the Disk Utility. It is also located in the “Utilities” folder inside the “Applications” folder.

Now choose the dmg file in the sidebar & tap the “Convert” button.

Select a name & location for the image. Choose the “DVD/CD Master” underneath “Image Format”, and tap “Save”.

Disk Utility will start the transformation. However, it should just take a few minutes to relay the size of your image.

Though you should now have a cdr image file ready to transform to iso.

In order to convert the cdr file simply rename the extension to iso in Finder.

Whether you guys are unable to see the .cdr file extension so then you must have to turn on “show filename extensions” in Finder’s preferences first.

Simply using this method works well for mounting the iso file as a virtual drive. But whether you guys like to burn the image. Make a bootable CD or DVD it probably not work.

And I do not like you to waste any valuable blank CDs. Though you guys should use the command line method rather.
